When you think of winter, you might imagine cool breezes, bare trees and snuggling up in your Oodie by the fireplace. You may not realise it could be the PERFECT time to get married!

Wintery days can be magical, starting out with mist in the air, dew on the grass and ending with a beautifully sunny day -minus the sweat. If we've learnt anything from the past 5 years of weather in Sydney, it's that you could plan a wedding anytime from October-March and it could have a huge summer storm fall on it. A winter wedding could offer you the magic and romance without the added stress of the heat.

If you're planning a winter wedding, be assured that there are plenty of stunning flowers in season to choose from. Pictured above is a bouquet I made in June 2023 made from all Australian grown flowers. Tulips, cymbidium orchids, Aussie natives plus Grandiflora roses, dahlias, chrysanthemums, peppercorn foliage from home. Most colour palettes are available year round - blue can be a hard one depending on the availability of delphinium - but for my own wedding in July 2024 we had a range of pastel colours achieved through all local grown flowers (pictured below)

So what seasonal flowers are available during winter for your wedding?

Cymbidium Orchids

Winter is peak season for cymbidium orchids, known for their structured stems and exotic feel. Their elegant blooms last beautifully and come in a range of colours from creamy neutrals to rich burgundy and vibrant greens.

Tulips

Although we often think of tulips as a spring flower, many varieties are available in late winter. Perfectly formed and endlessly stylish, tulips add a playful yet sophisticated feel to winter arrangements.

Sweet Peas

For those dreamy, ruffled textures, sweet peas can still make an appearance early in winter, depending on the climate. Their soft, romantic scent and pastel colours bring a gentle, nostalgic touch to winter florals.

Ranunculus

Lush, layered, and wonderfully romantic, ranunculus are a winter gem. Their tightly coiled petals create a gorgeous, full effect, available in everything from soft nudes to vivid pinks and fiery oranges.

Ornamental Kale

For something a little unexpected, ornamental kale is a winter standout. With ruffled, rose-like centres in shades of soft lavender, dusty pink, creamy white, and deep green, it adds incredible texture and a unique, sculptural element to bouquets and installations. Plus, it holds up beautifully in cooler weather, making it perfect for winter events.

Hellebores (Winter Roses)

Known as the 'Winter Rose', hellebores bloom just when you need them most. Their delicate, nodding flowers come in moody hues like plum, deep green, mauve, and even almost black — perfect for adding drama to a winter palette.

Anemones

With their bold black centres and crisp, clean petals, anemones are a winter favorite for modern romantics. Available in striking shades of white, blush, crimson, and violet, they bring a hint of wild beauty to any floral design.
